Where to stay in Grado: old town, beaches and Pineta

How to choose between Grado’s old town, Costa Azzurra, Città Giardino and Grado Pineta.

← Back to Grado

Grado is compact, but the character of a stay changes considerably between the historic centre, the western beach, the main seafront and Grado Pineta. The right base depends less on distance alone and more on whether you want evening atmosphere, direct beach access, family facilities or quieter surroundings.

Historic centre and Porto Mandracchio

The old town is the most practical choice for travellers who want to explore on foot. The Basilica of Sant’Eufemia, Santa Maria delle Grazie, narrow lanes, Porto Mandracchio and the sea promenade are close together. Restaurants and evening walks are easy to reach without a car. This area works especially well for short breaks and for visitors who want to combine culture, lagoon views and time by the sea.

Costa Azzurra

Costa Azzurra lies on the western side of the island. It offers a useful balance between beach access and proximity to the historic centre. The official tourism portal describes it as a family-friendly beach with play areas and sports facilities. It can suit travellers who expect to spend much of the day by the water but still want to reach the old town without organising a long transfer.

Main beach and Città Giardino

The main GIT beach is the most structured and serviced part of the seafront. Città Giardino and Spiaggia al Bosco are oriented towards a more residential beach holiday. These areas are practical for families, longer stays and travellers who value organised beach services. Check the current operator pages before booking because access rules, seasonal opening dates and available services can change.

Grado Pineta

Pineta is around three kilometres from central Grado and is connected by a cycle route. It has a more open, beach-focused setting and is suitable for travellers who prefer a quieter base or want easy access to kitesurfing and outdoor activities. Reaching the historic centre is still possible by bicycle or local transport, but it is worth checking seasonal timetables before arrival.

Lagoon trips and boat departures

If lagoon excursions or a visit to Barbana are important, compare the location of the accommodation with the relevant departure point. Boat services are seasonal and weather dependent, so they should be confirmed directly with the operator.
