Getting around Gubbio: ZTL, parking, lifts and cable car
Practical information for reaching and exploring Gubbio’s steep historic centre without making assumptions about access.
Gubbio’s historic centre is compact, but it is built on a steep slope. The most effective plan is usually to leave the car below the oldest streets, walk through the centre and use the public lifts or cable car for specific sections when they are operating.
Restricted traffic zone
Vehicle access to the historic centre is regulated by the municipal ZTL system. The official portal publishes the active gates, time windows and authorisation information. Check it shortly before arrival: saved timetables and older accommodation instructions may no longer reflect the current rules.
If you are staying inside or near the restricted area, ask the property where guests should stop, unload luggage and park. A reservation does not automatically authorise entry through a ZTL gate.
Parking
Parking areas surround the lower edge of the centre, including zones around Piazza Quaranta Martiri and the Roman Theatre. Regulations, charges and event-day arrangements can change, so follow current signs and municipal notices rather than relying on an old list.
During major celebrations the municipality may introduce temporary closures, reserved areas and different traffic flows. Arriving early is useful, but it does not replace checking the official event notice.
Walking through the centre
Most of the medieval core is explored on foot. Distances are short, yet the height difference between the lower town and Piazza Grande is significant. Comfortable shoes and realistic walking times make a larger difference here than in a flat city.
Travellers with limited mobility should ask the accommodation and individual attractions about step-free access. Cobbles, slopes and temporary works can affect the most convenient route.
Public lifts
Municipal lifts connect Via Baldassini with Piazza Grande and Via XX Settembre with the cathedral and Palazzo Ducale area. The municipality publishes opening times and specific closure days, including some major festival dates. Verify the current notice because hours can be updated.
Colle Eletto cable car
The cable car links the city with Mount Ingino and the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo. It is a practical transport option and a visitor experience, but it should never be treated as continuously available. Check the operator or municipal page for the day’s hours and conditions.
Events and temporary restrictions
The Festa dei Ceri, the Palio della Balestra, Christmas events and other programmes can substantially change circulation and parking. The municipality publishes event-specific measures. If your stay overlaps a major date, plan the route before setting out and keep an alternative parking option.
