Where to stay in Gubbio: old town, Mount Ingino and countryside
How to choose between Gubbio’s medieval centre, the lower town, Mount Ingino and the surrounding countryside.
Gubbio rises steeply from the lower town towards Piazza Grande and Mount Ingino. A property that looks close on a map may still involve a demanding uphill walk, so the best area depends on mobility, parking and the kind of visit you are planning.
Historic centre
The medieval centre suits travellers who want to experience Gubbio mainly on foot. Piazza Grande, Palazzo dei Consoli, Via dei Consoli and the streets around the cathedral are close together, while restaurants and evening walks do not require another car journey.
The trade-off is access. Parts of the old town are covered by the municipal restricted-traffic system, streets can be steep and parking may be some distance from the property. Before booking, ask for the exact arrival instructions rather than assuming that a central address can be reached by car.
Piazza Quaranta Martiri and the lower town
The area around Piazza Quaranta Martiri and the Roman Theatre is a practical compromise. It sits below the steepest part of the historic centre and provides a useful starting point for walking uphill. Public lifts help with part of the climb, subject to current opening times.
This area can work well for a short cultural stay, for travellers arriving by car and for anyone who prefers to avoid carrying luggage through the narrowest streets.
Mount Ingino and Saint Ubaldo
The Basilica of Saint Ubaldo stands above the city on Mount Ingino. The Colle Eletto cable car connects the urban area with the mountain and offers a panoramic journey, but operating times and weather conditions should be checked directly before relying on it.
A stay near the cable-car area may suit visitors focused on the basilica, walking routes or the Festa dei Ceri. It is still important to compare the property location with the lower town and the historic-centre services you expect to use.
San Martino
San Martino is one of Gubbio’s historic quarters, known in winter for the Via del Presepe. It offers a strong medieval atmosphere, with lanes and stone buildings that make the neighbourhood part of the travel experience. The same topography means that accessibility and luggage handling deserve particular attention.
Countryside around Gubbio
The municipal territory includes hotels, country houses, farm stays and other accommodation outside the urban centre. The countryside is often the better choice for travellers with a car, families seeking more space and visitors using Gubbio as a base for the Umbrian Apennines.
Check the real driving time to the centre, parking at the property and evening transport options. A rural address described as “Gubbio” may be several kilometres from Piazza Grande.
