What to see in L’Aquila: a historic-centre itinerary
A source-checked route through Collemaggio, the centre, MuNDA, MAXXI and the heritage of the Perdonanza
L’Aquila rewards an itinerary that mixes monuments, museums and visible layers of reconstruction. Choose two or three main visits for one day; a second day leaves room for an exhibition or cultural event.
Collemaggio and the Perdonanza
The Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio is associated with the Celestinian forgiveness celebration, inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Check access around ceremonies and major events.
Piazza Duomo, San Bernardino and the 99 Cannelle
From Piazza Duomo you can continue towards San Bernardino. The Fountain of the 99 Cannelle stands at Borgo Rivera, outside that central axis, so allow a separate walking section.
MuNDA: use the current location
The National Museum of Abruzzo is open at Borgo Rivera on Via Tancredi da Pentima. Its official page says the sixteenth-century castle, the museum’s historic home, remains temporarily closed for works except for specially announced visits. Do not plan an ordinary castle visit without an official notice.
MAXXI L’Aquila
MAXXI L’Aquila occupies Palazzo Ardinghelli. Opening hours vary by weekday; consult the museum’s ticketing page before fixing the order of your day.
