L’Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026: planning a stay
Use the official programme and verify venues, transport and opening arrangements
Italy’s Ministry of Culture opened L’Aquila’s year as Capital of Culture on 17 January, describing more than 300 initiatives across exhibitions, performances and territorial projects. For a visitor, the useful task is to match dates, venues and travel time to a realistic stay.
Start with the dynamic programme
The official calendar is continuously updated. Filter by your dates, open each event page, and recheck venue and time shortly before travelling. An old announcement should not be the sole basis for a booking.
Match the event to your base
After selecting one or two anchor events, compare their venues with the exact accommodation address. The centre is practical for many evening activities, while Collemaggio can simplify arrival by car. Use the official visitor guide and AMA timetables; do not assume a shuttle is always free or unchanged.
Museums and temporary programmes
MAXXI L’Aquila presents exhibitions and public events, with hours that vary through the week. MuNDA publishes current information for Borgo Rivera and announces exceptional castle visits separately.
Living heritage
The Celestinian forgiveness celebration is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Large celebrations may mean heavier demand and transport changes, so verify arrangements with official sources.
How long to stay
Two nights can combine monuments, a museum and one or two events without rushing. This is planning guidance, not a promise of tickets or rooms: confirm accommodation, admission and event details directly.
